It’s snowing on Staten Island, so I took this opportunity to do a quick webcam-quality cover of “I Feel Weird” by Steel Train.

Someone please kill all genre pride in music

Looking at you, Pop-Punk. Hardcore, you too. Ska pride tends to wear off in Junior year of HS. If not, seek help.

Genres don’t need to be defended; they should be expanded and improved upon. Examples of success in this endeavor:

_

Pop-Punk: Good Luck, The Motorcycle Industry, Blink-182

Hardcore: Folly, So Many Ways, Touché Amoré

Ska: Streetlight Manifesto, The Best of the Worst, Arrogant Sons of Bitches/Bomb the Music Industry!

_

These are bands that left the confines of strict genre purism and fused different elements and dynamics together. They’re way more exciting to me than your Man Overboards, your Most Precious Bloods, and your Toasters.

Haven’t been able to stop listening to Good Luck since we had the privilege of playing with them. These lyrics really hit home for me.

Good Luck- How To Live Here

Here we are in this world.
I don’t know how we got here, but somehow we learned how to live here.
Now our brains are too big for our heads. They’re expanding.
You can order your life through meticulous planning,
but it’s a crapshoot
when things unexpectedly start to move faster.
And you try to avert a disaster.
But you can’t always get what you’re after.
I know you know this.

We all want to feel content,
but we need more than a place to shit and to lay a bed.
If sometimes living doesn’t terrify you, if love doesn’t pulverize you, then where are you at?
Where’s the power in that?
Though it’s been nothing but complicated
since the first time that two people dated,
and your heart makes you deathly afraid,
it’s all you’ve got.

Is it impossible, friend?
Is it only a dream to find truth in the visions you see?
Or to believe the love that I’m waiting for is somewhere waiting for me?
Well maybe the way to get what you want
is to stop waiting for it to show up.
Have faith in the wind and the rain it will come (but only if you let it come).

Yeah, everyone feels alone.
Maybe more, maybe less, maybe this year or next or when they grow old.
But what a bogus affliction!
It’s the human condition. We all want affection
and the sound of another heartbeat.

Maybe when this ends and the stars all call down for me
it’ll finally make sense, or just as likely still be mystery.
I don’t know where you are my friend,
I don’t know if I’ll ever know.
But maybe you’ll be there when it’s time to go.

KILL CDs

I would like nothing more than the extinction of the compact disc as a profitable means for selling music. The only reason Curious Volume has made CDs in the past has been because the fact of the matter is that they aren’t COMPLETELY dead yet. However, I hope that in the next few years, all our releases could come out exclusively online and on vinyl with fucking awesome artwork and extras, abandoning CDs altogether. If you want our music on CD, CD-Rs are really cheap and burning a mix is extremely easy. We give away our music for free online, and that should be the standard for rock and roll. This principle of giving the songs away for free so that anybody anywhere can easily access it does not devalue your music if it inspires kids to come out and see you, buy a t-shirt, and tell friends about you. The music industry is depressed over the horrific decline in CD sales last year, when the music community should be thrilled with how many free downloads there have been. The thirst for music is stronger than ever, and the availability of it is expanding people’s tastes dramatically and allowing them to check out new artists without having to invest in them first. I personally go onto the websites of record labels, take down a list of every band, and proceed to illegally download each band’s music. Eventually, this band will come on shuffle. Often I will enjoy what I hear and decide to listen to the band’s whole album. If I can get into that, I’ll look up their tour schedule and see when they’re coming around. I’ll go to that show, maybe buy some merch, and bring some friends with me who will do the same. This is the way music should be. NEVER buy a band’s album through websites like Amazon or anything. If you for some reason want to support a label, buy it through their website. If not, buy a vinyl record directly from the band at their show, and they will see way more profit. The record will come with a free download code. There ya go. Kill CDs.
