If you’re reading this post, you’ve undoubtedly watched or read last night’s State of the Union address, so I’ll spare you unnecessary regurgitation.
What I cannot leave unmentioned is a big fat THANK YOU to President Obama for helping rid my remaining idealism at a young age. Why do I want to say thanks? Here’s a brief list:
Thank you for reminding me that the Bill of Rights is just a piece of paper. After all, the people who wrote this document were racist slave owners so anything they wrote must be discounted. This includes such traditions as due process and freedom of expression.
Thank you for making it abundantly clear that neither major party gives a rat’s ass about openness and accountability. It takes a liberal elected in the same year Pelosi promised to “clean up the swamp” to properly entrench a callous disregard for public accountability in our nation. Americans have had scant reason to trust Washington since Watergate. You’ve destroyed that remaining trust. Well done.
Thank you for incorporating the worst of both parties. After being given the Nobel Peace prize for the heroic act of being elected President, you have proceeded to display every bit of the blood lust of your predecessor.
You inherited the mantle of neoconservatism from Bush and have proved yourself even better than he at “granting” freedom to people. Even better, you subtly use populism to your advantage while quietly working to break fundraising records. Your hypocrisy knows few bounds.
Finally, thank you for reminding me why our Constitution so explicitly constrains the power of the executive. No man should have the power to detain U.S. citizens indefinitely. No man should be capable of making life or death decisions for U.S. citizens on his own. No man should be allowed to attach signing statements dictating how he will or will not interpret the laws enacted by the Congress.
So, thank you President Obama. After voting for you as an alternative to big government neoconservatism, you’ve showed me why any vote for a mainstream Democratic or Republican candidate is a vote against liberty. Thanks for opening my eyes.
